Open Anthropology Cooperative

Open Anthropology Cooperative (http://openanthcoop.ning.com/) is a fairly new forum here on Ning that may be of interest.  The site serves as a portal for a number of interest groups that are of interest to anthropologists.  The great thing about it is, if you do not find a group that matches your interests, it is very easy to start your own.

SfAA on Ning

The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) has a web site on Ning.  It's just like ours...except that they have over 700(!) members.  Anyway, it is well worth checking out: http://sfaanet.ning.com/

BAAPA's Spring Look!

The site seemed a little dark with spring in the air, so I changed the appearance with one of Ning's new templates (minus a lovely but frou-frou image) to perk it up. Give me a thumbs up or thumbs down--if thumbs down win, I'll change it back!

Help me ID photos!

Hi everyone-
Thanks to everyone who tolerated the interruption and smiled for the camera at the BAAPA happy hour during the AAA meetings. Apologies to those I did not identify in the photos--I asked for names and was sure I'd remember them, but that glass of wine afterward washed the memory away...If you're in these pictures or know who is, will you help me identify them so we know who these fun-loving folks are?
Thanks!
Darcie

Nancy Frishberg replied to Darcie Luce's discussion 'Future of BAAPA Ning Network'
I feel we're such a low traffic group that it's probably not worth a heavy weight process to collect money. If someone feels strongly and can underwrite it for a year, great. Otherwise, how about switching to a different platform. I see FB…

You are right, Darcie. We had envisioned this site being more of a hub for a virtual community for networking, sharing ideas, etc. But since, as Roland suggested, most BAAPA members are likely on Facebook, perhaps that is the way to go. It may also…

Thanks for responding, Roland! I think you've identified some good reasons to use Facebook, if there's enough interest in maintaining an online social network beyond the Yahoo! group. At the time that we created this Ning network, there…

I know that not everyone is a fan of facebook, but that might be a free platform that many are already on, with an openness for more to join and find us. Pros/cons of that option? -Roland

Dissertation writing help for dissertation topic selection and ideas generation

I spent each and every night until 4: 00 am, a time came when I could not write further, not even a single character of my dissertation. I went to the bed and start planning for next day progress of my dissertation

but helpless as I fell to sleep and the next morning, 8 o’ clock I was up

writing my dissertation again.

This is the most common situation for students because most if not all students have…

A beautiful recollection of Lévi-Strauss by Scott Atran

"A Memory of Claude Lévi-Strauss" appeared in the Huffington Post

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/scott-atran/a-memory-of-claude-lvi-st_b_349597.html

Claude Lévi-Strauss, arguably the world's most famous and influential

anthropologist, died on October 30 at the age of 100. This is a

lasting memory of my first encounter with him.

In 1974, when I was a graduate… Continue

Claude Lévi-Strauss, French anthropologist, dies at 100

By Alexander F. Remington

Washington Post Staff Writer

Claude Lévi-Strauss, 100, one of the preeminent social anthropologists of the 20th century, whose erudite, often mind-bendingly labored studies of indigenous Brazilian tribes led to influential theories examining human behavior and culture, died over the weekend in Paris. No cause of death was… Continue

Dreams From His Mother

By MICHAEL R. DOVE

New Haven

PRESIDENT OBAMA’s late mother, Ann Dunham Soetoro, was famous for the good cheer and optimism that she preserved in the face of a complex and challenging world. Her personality went hand-in-hand with her career as an anthropologist in Indonesia and Pakistan, where she studied and worked with village craftsmen, slum-dwellers and countless others. I knew Dr. Soetoro as a friend and… Continue

Anthropology Now!

One of the more intriguing developments at this year's AAA Annual Meeting was the unveiling of Anthropology Now, a magazine for the general public that, in the words of editors Katherine McCaffrey, Emily Martin, Ida Susser, and Susan Harding, "gives insights of anthropology a clear, accessible and lively voice". I have long believed that the doings of anthropologists could be of great interest to the general public if presented in an accessible form. Besides, as the editors note, "Other… Continue
